Double whammy

Article Abstract:

The double trigger policy is the latest instrument used by the insurance industry to stave off capital markets which the industry views as its main competition. The policy takes its name from two events that must take place to trigger the discharge of the insurance. The two events must be noncorrelated, that is, one is linked to an index such as stocks, and the other, related to traditional insurable exposure. For the policy holder to be paid off by the insurance firm, both triggers must occur. Compared to derivatives, double trigger policies are less expensive in lessening risk.

Betting on a hard insurance market

Article Abstract:

Many companies are buying three-year insurance policies in anticipation of a hardening market. Long-term policies can offer up to 25% cost savings over multiple one-year policies, and offer simplified administration. Possible drawbacks, however, include locking into coverages that may end up becoming unnecessary, high upfront premiums and the continuance of a soft market.
