E-festive season picks up after casual start

Article Abstract:

British retailers trading on the internet appear to have done well at Christmas 1999, though some commentators had thought otherwise, since trading had begun slowly for conventional retailers. One company that has reported strong trading has been eToys, which set up its British operation in Oct 1999. Sky Digital's interactive TV service, Open, has also reported strong trading. Meanwhile, margin pressures for traditional retailers have intensified, and some forecasts have been downgraded by brokers.

UK retail sector: margin squeeze

Article Abstract:

UK retailers have seen pressure on their profits in the few years to 1995, and consumers still appear reluctant to pay higher prices, so costs will have to be reduced. Mark-ups have fallen from early 1992 and retailers have absorbed some price rises, affecting gross margins. Operating costs have not been held down and Sunday opening has affected cost control. Large retailers can put pressure on suppliers, while small retailers are likely to see their market share eroded.
