EMUsulation: for Italy, read France?

Article Abstract:

France may be excluded from a planned European currency union despite a policy of maintaining the value of the French franc. The policy has lasted for 12 years and has been adhered to by different governments. Germany has prepared for union over 30 years and has suffered hyperinflation which has led to determination not to allow the German market to fall in value. European capital markets are likely to see upheavals and some of these will be prompted by realization that France will not join the proposed monetary union in 1998.

Italy's Euro dream stays alive

Article Abstract:

Italy plans to join European monetary union (Emu) and is preparing for this by rejoining the European exchange rate mechanism (ERM). Italy's budget deficit is forecast at 3.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) for 1997 and government debt is 123% of GDP, while convergence criteria for joining Emu is 3% and 60% respectively. Yet Italian borrowing is dropping, and the convergence criteria may be relaxed since other countries are having problems meeting them. Italy could still be among the first to join Emu.

EU membership in sight

Article Abstract:

Slovenia is joining the European Union (EU) which accounted for 60% of the country's commodity trade in 1994. Italy opposes a Slovenian restriction on foreigners acquiring land and this is to be changed. A referendum will be held on the land ownership issue if parliament cannot agree, and this will open European Union membership. Full membership is not likely to be ratified until 2000 and will have to involve all the EU's 15 member states.
