Article Abstract:

The number of investment options offered by companies to salaried workers has considerably increased over the years, as corporate treasurers seek novel means of reducing their 401(k) liability burdens. General Motors, for instance, has developed a comprehensive investment scheme in Jan 1999 that allows eligible employees to choose from 71 stock options. Company officials expressed optimism over the plan, believing that it would render the company's financial portfolio more stable. Financial experts feel otherwise, claiming that it would likely increase GM's risk exposure.

Pension revolution in Japan

Article Abstract:

Japanese government is introducing a new scheme in retirement plans with the defined-contribution (DC) retirement plans to help pension burdens. The DC plans combine features of American style 401(k) and individual retirement accounts. Independent accounts can be set and all contributions are become tax-exempt. The plans can help alleviate burdens of defined-benefit plans among local firms and multinationals. DC plans are portable and less expensive, allowing workers to make easy changes in future plans.
