Bottled water market (despite PR hits) gushes

Article Abstract:

Justifying the quality and price of brand-name bottled water is becoming more difficult because of the number of commercials and news stories questioning the nature of the product. However, bottled water consumption among Americans is on the rise. Residents of San Diego, CA, possess the highest water consumption rate at 5.1 eight-ounce servings for bottled and tap water. Evian takes its "pure" mineral water from under the Swiss Alps which explains the presence of minerals that affect the taste, stated Evian Spokesperson Michael Neuwirth. Per capita consumption of bottled water increased from 4.5 gallons in 1986 to 11.0 gallons in 1996. IBWA VP-Communications Adele Logan-Galen believes that a new focus on health is spurring an increase in bottled water consumption.

Philip Morris' consumer products are 'outed' by activist groups

Article Abstract:

Philip Morris Inc's (PM) consumer goods, such as Miracle Whip, Shake 'n Bake and Kool-Aid, are some of the company's popular brands that INFACT and Adbusters want consumers to boycott. The activist groups ran an advertisement in Harper's magazines' December 2000 issue to inform readers about products marketed by PM. INFACT alleges that the company, together with other global cigarette firms, is orchestrating a global lobbying campaign to prevent any attempt by the World Health Organization to restrict the marketing of tobacco.
