Effect of road layout and road environment on driving performance, drivers' physiology and road appreciation

Article Abstract:

The changes brought on the infrastructure of the road surface on rural roads in the Netherlands appear to be effective in reducing speed and show potential for wider safety application. The design of the road infrastructure changes was intended to produce discomfort for the speeding driver by providing noxious auditory and haptic feedback. A decrease in driving speed and swerving behavior was found on the experimental roads, and this was coupled with a decrease in heart rate variability, which led to an increase in mental load.

Acute cardio-respiratory changes induced by hyperpnoea using a respiratory muscle trainer

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the cardio-respiratory effects of voluntary hyperpnoea using a Respiratory Muscle Trainer (RMT) with three different sized rebreathing bags. Results showed that the heart rate and blood pressure were significantly elevated by hyperpnoea, but lung function and blood lactate was not changed from resting values.
