Electricity bid targets man the barricades

Article Abstract:

UK electric utilities are vulnerable to takeover bids and this has led to uncertainty over the future structure of the sector. All 12 UK utilities are vulnerable due to strong balance sheets which make them attractive. Mergers are one means of defense. The UK regulator will investigate the planned acquisition of Manweb by Scottish Power, which could be referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Cost savings from mergers may lead to the regulator seeking lower prices, which would deter further mergers.

Institutions favour Trafs in electricity bid battle

Article Abstract:

A bid for Northern Electric by Trafalgar House is likely to succeed since it will not be referred to the UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Institutional shareholders are likely to accept this offer and they have the final say in the bid. Northern Electric's shares have been valued at 10.95 pounds sterling by the market. Trafalgar is unlikely to increase its offer to over 11.50 pounds sterling, despite the efforts of Northern Electric to push the offer higher.

Stop the bandwagon, Northern wants to get off

Article Abstract:

Trafalgar House is making a bid for Northern Electric which is seeking a referral of the bid to the UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission. A referral appears likely in part because the government may benefit from a delay due to its plans to sell its 40% stakes in PowerGen and National Power. This sale is expected to net 4 billion pounds sterling, but investors' interest in the sale could be distracted if there is speculation over the Northern Electric bid.
