Empowering the grass roots economy

Article Abstract:

Commercial Banks do not lend to the poor in order to take them out of poverty, but to the rich in order to make them richer, and only those who have collateral are deemed creditworthy. One of the most successful microfinancial institutions, the Grameen Bank (GB) started in the village of Jobra in Bangladesh in 1976 by lending $27 to a group of 52 people, focuses almost exclusively on lending to women who make up 96% of the bank's members, as experience has shown that women are more reliable borrowers.
