Some were inventive and simple while others had daunting graphic or programmatic density. Their general criteria for judging was not the complexity of programs but how the ideas were executed. Article Abstract:

Mechanical engineer Amy Smith is a former Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana who designs for developing communities believes that affordability and cultural context become important for designing a consumer product for people who have very less to spend. She was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur Foundation 'genius grant', a part of which she wants to use for moving her projects forward.
