Epidemiologic concerns for ergonomists: illustrations from the musculoskeletal disorder literature

Article Abstract:

Ergonomics and epidemiology share some common objectives, and the epidemiological methods are being used in ergonomic studies of work related risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders. Epidemiology is composed of elemental disciplines, which need to be equally represented to conduct a successful research. The multidisciplinary approach requires a common base of knowledge and understanding of methodologies along with communication and collaboration. Musculoskeletal disorder literature is used to explain design and study methods.

The role of surface roughness in the measurement of slipperiness

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that surface roughness measurement is an important component for assessing risk of occupational slip-and-fall accidents. Roughness is best measured by laser scanning confocal microscopy and a stylus-type profilometer, and applied to both shoe and floor surfaces.

Occupational slip, trip, and fall-related injuries - can the contribution of slipperiness be isolated?

Article Abstract:

Surveillance systems are analyzed for their ability to capture and document slipping exposures in order to prevent occupational slip-and-fall accidents. Variations in these systems may interfere with the accuracy of isolating the slipping factor in accidents.
