Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value

Article Abstract:

In 1970, the United Kingdom passed a law, the 1970 Equal Pay Act, which provided for equal pay for men and women. In July 1982, the European Court determined that the United Kingdom law did not go far enough as it stated equal pay for 'like' work, not 'equal' work. An amendment, passed in January 1984, closed the gap requiring equal pay when the demands made are of equal value to one who is higher paid. It does allow for differences which can be shown by employers to be of a non-personal nature. A more comprehensive bill, the Sex Equality Bill, failed to pass in December 1983. The United Kingdom will be under further pressure to change from Brussels and from within the United Kingdom.

I got busted for shoplifting
