Article Abstract:

United Kingdom individual savings accounts (Isas) have replaced tax-exempt sprecial savings accounts and personal equity plans as savings schemes offering tax advantages. Isas have been criticised as too complex and some changes may be made following a review by the tax authorities and consultation with the investment and insurance industries. Isas have three components, stocks, insurance and cash, and there are both capital gains and income tax benefits. Naxi-Isas have the constraint that only one provider can be used, but equity holdings can be maximised.

Beware the April upheaval

Article Abstract:

The UK tax year ends on April 5 and this date is especially significant in 1997 since there may be a change in government this year. Tax planning involves using allowances including income tax and capital gains tax allowances. Gifts under 3,000 pounds sterling can also be made with no inheritance tax due. There are tax advantages for personal equity plans (Peps) and tax-exempt special savings accounts (Tessas). Pensions are also a tax-efficient way of saving.

Political Pep-talks

Article Abstract:

Investors in UK personal equity plans (Peps) are faced with an election in 1997 which brings uncertainty as to government policy toward these investment vehicles. UK share prices have fallen since Mar 1997 and could continue to fall. All political parties see the need to encourage saving but Peps may not be seen as the best way to do this. Investors should avoid taking decisions simply because they believe that a particular party could win the election.
