Fax magic

Article Abstract:

Faxes are increasingly used for communicating important information but are vulnerable to tampering and should not be used as audit evidence without cross checking. Fax machines can be programmed to give the wrong transmitting number and time so, on receipt of a fax, it is essential to telephone the sender to check the origin is correct and that the contents are accurate. Alternatively, the 'pull' facility on some fax machines can be used to ensure the origin is certain. It is possible for information in a fax to be tampered with so auditors should attempt to receive faxes directly. Faxes produced on thermographic paper may fade so photocopies should be kept.

Counseling risk

Article Abstract:

The decision in the case of Oliviero Holdings Ltd. v. accounting firm Deloitte & Touche Inc. shows the liabilities faced by accountants who take aggressive filing positions on behalf of their clients. Oliviero sued Deloitte & Touche after it lost a case against Revenue Canada. The court ruled that Deloitte failed to sufficiently appraise Oliviero of the consequences of taking an aggressive filing position.
