Feasibility of a cash forward contract: An application to the French and Spanish potato sectors

Article Abstract:

The interest of farmers in the cash forward contract (CFC) offered by a growers' cooperative to lock in a fixed price for their output and the risk cover available for the forward contract in the form of stabilization fund and futures contract on selected French and Spanish potato sectors is evaluated. Risk-averse growers are found to be interested in CFCs to reduce their revenue instability and though hedging futures contracts may reduce the cooperative's financial risk; the stabilization fund alone is more effective.

Gains from ISO certification in the UK meat sector

Article Abstract:

The study on the impact of ISO standards on the UK meat industry indicates that ISO validation has the potential to become a customary business practice in the industry. Moreover, it has been established that food processors, wholesalers, and retailers are urging suppliers to register under ISO. This shows that ISO certification is an integral criterion for suppliers to retain their market share, and even to boost it as retailers only want to deal with accredited suppliers.

Empirical models of meat demand: how do they fit out of sample?

Article Abstract:

Two consumer demand models for meat, the linear, relative-price real-income specification and the almost ideal demand system, were examined by performing out of sample tests, with seasonal effects and habit formation as the parameters. The models were tested over five different time periods. Results revealed that both models have the same levels of performance. A chi-square test supported this conclusion by showing little statistical difference between the model types.
