Fleet needs DD(X), its cutting-edge capabilities, surface chief says

Vice Adm. Terrance Etnyre of the US Navy believes that the DD(X) next-generation destroyer possesses a capability to defend the country's interests that is unprecedented and unmatched by the existing Arleigh Burke Class (DDG-51) destroyers including a 50-fold improvement in stealth. Other cutting-edge capabilities make it imperative that a DDG that can incorporate the advanced technology is built notwithstanding the expected cost of US$ 3.3 billion per ship.

Will DDG destroyers kill DD(X) program? Sen. Collins rejects Navy DD(X) plan as no improvement

Article Abstract:

The Navy advanced a plan where in General Dynamics Corp. unit Bath Iron Works in Maine and the Northrop Grumman Corp. unit Ship Systems in Mississippi will build one DD(X) destroyer with the Navy deciding which firm would build the remaining ships in the DD(X) class based on competitive performance. However, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) feels this would create a monopoly in surface ships construction.

DD(X) destroyer, CG(X) cruiser cuts seen as best for lowering costs

Article Abstract:

A defense analyst with the non-partisan Congressional Research Service is of the view that downscaling DD(X) and CG(X) programs is the best way for savings. He explained that downscaling DD(X) design could yield a 25 percent to 35 percent reduction in costs and would avail the US Navy of a new, smaller and les expensive version that nonetheless would represent an advance in technology.
