Prison industries

Article Abstract:

Furniture manufacturers are protesting the government's decision to procure furniture exclusively from prison industries. Prisons are awarded these contracts to provide jobs for inmates, and the procurement system forces furniture makers to subcontract their production to prisons, which are thus given preference over other companies. The Prison Industries Reform Alliance is working towards legislation that would ensure the continued existence of prisoner programs while maintaining work for private companies.

Foreign exchange

Article Abstract:

Investors find Australia's foreign exchange market attractive due to its convenient time zone for trading when other markets are closed, and because of its agricultural and mining industries. The Australian dollar (A$) is comparable to the U.S. dollar in purchasing power parity. The A$ is stabilized by low inflation, but is still vulnerable to commodity prices.

Machina ex Machina

Article Abstract:

Machine-independent software, such as UNIX and CP-M operating systems, isolate hardware-dependent sections of input-output routines. The programmer must view resources through the operating system, which may generate anachronisms as real hardware changes with time. This virtual machine approach may call modem data punch paper-tape data and vice versa.
