Investors should seek unit trusts that have performed in a consistent way since trusts that perform at the top of the league for a brief spell can then see a drop in performance. League tables are not enough to assess performance, since they focus on the past, so give limited clues on possible future trends. Performance snapshots are more useful, and they should refer to discrete periods. Discrete performance data are not always available to private investors, though professional investors can make use of it.
