Article Abstract:

City of London based pension fund investment managers dominate the market, but many Scottish boutiques are capable of offering products. However several major Scottish insurance companies have struggled to move into the segregated pension fund market, and have been perceived as slow and cumbersome, whether they are based in England or Scotland. Technology advances have meant that portfolios can be run equally well anywhere, and it is skills, resources and processes that are important.

Many pension fund investment industry marketing directors have lost jobs due to personality and culture clashes and the general poor economic climate. Many merchant banks are now placing more junior people in marketing posts, as fund managers become move involved in client liaison. However many insurance companies are keen to recruit marketing personnel with established credentials, with the aim of improving their image and gaining a larger share of the segregated market.

Charities need effective investment management to make the best use of existing resources, and event he smallest charities are obliged to obtain advice on investments. Possible sources of advice are accountants, solicitors, stockbrokers, local government treasurers and bank and building society managers. Charities are increasingly appointing independent investment managers.
