Gerber Scientific Inc appears to be recovering from a three-year weak corporate performance. The high-technology equipment maker posted a 13% earning rise for the fiscal second quarter ended Oct 1992 due to a 7% revenue hike. The gains were attributed to the satisfactory showing of Gerber's nesting and materials handling systems. Its microprocessor-controlled production systems sales, however, is still struggling. Wall Street money manager Mario Gabelli is optimistic about the stock as typified by his purchase of another 95,000 shares last Nov 1992.

Altera Corp announced that September 1992 quarter results will be even lower than the June figures. Altera, the manufacturer of high-performance integrated circuits, suffered a 50% loss in its June 1992 quarter earnings incurred from a big inventory and the changing of the pricing scheme of its MAX 500 semiconductor chips. The continuing poor performance was attributed to a weak demand for its Erasable Logic Devices and competitive pressure coming from Cypress Semiconductor Corp, which supplies Altera's silicon wafers.
