Global remote sensing programmes, global science, global change: an Australianperspective

Article Abstract:

Expenditure on 'big science' space program is no longer the priority of Western governments, due to major changes in both society and science, since the 1960s. Sociologists, artists and architects have documented the changes which scientists and engineers have ignored. Today, scientists find themselves in a society which has evidently benefited from scientific enterprise, but which has adopted a distinctly anti-scientific stance. Countries such as Australia, must adopt a realistic space program which can help the country adopt a commercial space policy, instead of resorting to old-style, large-scale manufacturing and launch services.

Regulation of space activities and trans-science: public perceptions and policy considerations

Article Abstract:

An analysis of litigation challenges to scientific programs carried out to determine the factors and considerations which may influence courts to judicially review a mission profile finds that public perceptions have a great influence in revising a program. Public perceptions have played an important role in the movement of man into space. Suggestions for countering potential legal challenges by tailoring a program for the public's approval are discussed.

From Halley's Comet to solar terrestrial science: the evolution of the Inter-Agency Consultative Group

Article Abstract:

The Inter-Agency Consultative Group (IACG) was formed 11 years ago in an effort to optimize scientific benefits from certain areas of space science. The IACG has advocated international space cooperation as one of the best ways to achieve this goal. The organization has had some success, such as the recent multinational project which investigated Halley's Comet. However, its efforts regarding solar terrestrial science have not been very fruitful.
