Globalization frustrated: the case of white goods

Article Abstract:

The appliance industry of Europe, examined from the washing machine industry's domestic scene, illustrates how shifting economic conditions can reduce global strategic value, questioning the commonly-held idea that mature firms are always ready for such global strategies. Integral to the economic variations are the accompanying variety demand increases and the manufacturing scale decreases which lessen the national potential of the strategic market. Three categories of firms were considered in the strategic analysis: the national firms, the exporters, and the global firms. Strategic choice is seen to be the key factor in the fluctuating finances of leading companies. In Europe, no single trend can be identified in the industrial sector, rather trends are dependent on the industry-type and on the time factor.

Interactions between marketing and R&D departments in implementing different business strategies

Article Abstract:

Differences in the interaction between marketing and research departments under different business unit strategies are examined. Propositions regarding inter-departmental conflict, conflict resolution methods, and the effectiveness of the resolution methods are presented, based on the Miles and Snow typology of strategy. To test these propositions, interviews were conducted with the marketing personnel of three business units of a Fortune 500 company. The results suggests that conflict between marketing and research departments is the highest among business units that pursue a prospector strategy.

Strategic groups, asymmetrical mobility barriers and contestability

Article Abstract:

The literature on strategic groups is examined and extended by clarifying the difference between optional approaches to group formation and by focusing on the significance of asymmetrical mobility barriers. Groups are linked with the concept of contestability so as to make progress toward an explanation of industry structure evolution. Multivariate group analysis can be used to keep information rather than just summarize it in binary groupings.
