Group: defense procurement still not joint enough

Article Abstract:

The study conducted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, titled 'Beyond Goldwater-Nichols: Defense Reform for a New Strategic Era,' urges the military and the Congress to build on the Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986, which was responsible for the current joint-oriented military. The study recommended the create a command and control (C2) task force headed by a three-star general or admiral consisting of assets taken from the Joint Staff's J-6 and the Defense Information Systems Agency.

Boeing missile defense programs go $380 million over budget

Article Abstract:

The General Accounting Office (GAO) criticized Pentagon's rush program to deploy a basic missile defense system by the end of 2004 due to which two Boeing Co. missile defense programs ran $380 million over the budget in fiscal 2003. The GAO was of the opinion that the contractor's cost performance in fiscal year 2003 has steadily declined but scheduled performance has been missed.

Electronic noses coming for military, homeland defense

Article Abstract:

An electronic-nose technology for sniffing out chemical agents, developed by Cyrano Sciences, Inc is acquired by Smith Detections at a cost of 15 million dollars. This electronic nose can detect up to 30 compounds by creating a digital signature of it's smell and will be used in detecting chemical warfare agents but it can be applied to detect biological agents also.
