Hard times ahead for software pirates?

Article Abstract:

Software manufacturers are determined to combat the proliferation of software piracy. Since their assembly, two software manufacturers' organizations have been busy trying to contain the rise of software piracy, specifically within organizations. The Federation Against Software Theft, which favors education over prosecution, operates a corporate membership program and provides organizations moving toward protecting themselves from software piracy with wide range of advice and software self-audit packs. The less tolerant Business Software Alliance has raided organizations suspected of illegal software copying and use. It describes auditing accountants as uniquely positioned to contain software piracy and encourages their involvement. Other steps taken by software manufacturers to protect their products include the launching of licensing agreements.

The financial screen test

Article Abstract:

The British film industry is experiencing economic difficulty and the government is largely to blame. Poor public funding and the lack of continuity in the government's management of the industry have brought on the film industry's decline. A concerted effort of investors and government is necessary for the film industry's survival. In June 1990, a six-part plan was formulated by 20 leading film makers and officials in a seminar chaired by Margaret Thatcher. Among the provisions of the proposal are government agreements for a planned film commission and the improvement of public support for the industry, the immediate infusion of cash into the industry, and the establishment of a working party. The formation of the European Film Finance and Insurance Association should serve to facilitate dialogue between film makers and investors.
