Where are they going, and why?

Article Abstract:

The choice of a new location for companies planning to move out of London is dependent on several factors. The most common 'pull' factors of an area include its promixity to London, communication structures and a motorway network. A 1991 study done by the London Chamber of Commerce showed that almost 50% of companies considering relocation planned to remain inside the M25, and 18% more were intending to stay in the South East part of the city. The existence of communication links were found to be essential for almost all of the companies, with 90% saying that public transport systems were vital to them and 98% claiming the same regarding airport/motorway access. Other important consideration in the selection of a new location are the availability, cost and flexibility of labor. An area's life-enhancing qualities, although they may be considered, do not generally influence locational choice.

Britain benefits from reunification

Article Abstract:

British corporations are actively investing in the five new eastern German states. Much of the investment has been made through German subsidiaries of British companies. Direct investment from British-based companies, however, has been deterred by investor concerns about such problems as ownership questions, bureaucratic delays, and pollution. These problems are nevertheless considered manageable, and direct investment and joint ventures are expected to increase as the eastern states become an integral part of British corporations' expansion strategy in Germany.
