Hedging your fund bets

Article Abstract:

Hedging can provide protection against currency movements but can also be expensive and contrary movements in the market can eliminate the benefits. Liquidity and flexibility are important since currency movements may be rapid. Fund managers should consider investors' needs when they decide whether or not to hedge. Excessive hedging turns a fund into a hedge fund with speculative elements. General funds can allocate assets over a wide range and take currency movements into account.
