High-tech firms get low grade for PR

Article Abstract:

High-tech companies in the US are leaders in their industry but are inept in public relations (PR), concludes Susan Thomas, director of global technology at Ketchum. Thomas says high-tech companies are not polishing their PR machinery in the mistaken belief that their domination is secured. She, however, believes that the continuing domination of US high- tech firms rests on shaky ground in a global economy. She advises high- tech companies to be more service-oriented and focus less on production.

Analyst Fred Hickey of New Hampshire said H-P's predilection to suddenly announcing lower-than-expected earnings without warning wreaks havoc among anlysts and investors. Hickey, however, believes in H-P's long-term prospects.
