Article Abstract:

International financial activity is on track to reach another record year in 1997 unless the financial turbulence ongoing in Southeast Asia and the volatile movements in the stock market force dramatic business retrenchment in 4th qtr 1997. Strong economic activity in the US, a favorable growth outlook for Continental Europe, positive developments toward the establishment of the Economic and Monetary Union, and low nominal, long-term interest rates and inflation have supported strong international financial activity.
