Hold your fire

Article Abstract:

A price war among UK newspaper publishers may end. Share prices of newspaper publishers have been affected by the war, which was begun by Rupert Murdoch's company, News Corporation, in 1994. Once the price of his newspaper was cut, other companies had to follow. The cost of paper has risen and this could hit profits. The Times has benefited from an increase in circulation, as has the Sun newspaper. A truce in the price war would help share prices of newspaper publishers, but only if it were to last.

Prudent move

Article Abstract:

UK nursing homes are likely to change their accounting practices following a move by Takare. Takare has seen a rise in its share price since the company announced that more conservative practices on interest costs and depreciation would be used. This will cut the company's profit in 1995, though Cresta Care and other nursing homes would see a large cut in their profits if they used similar conservative practices. Hoteliers are also considering whether to depreciate real estate assets.

Yes minister, you're clueless

Article Abstract:

Former cabinet ministers often move into industry or finance, but some of them have failed to prevent the stock market collapse of the company with which they have become involved. They seem to have only limited business instincts, and some observers have started to say that they should not have been appointed directors at all. This issue has become particularly urgent recently with the investigations of the Nolan committee into standards in public life.
