Holiday firms are gloomy

Article Abstract:

UK tour operators and transportation companies differ in their response to a 100% increase in UK airport departure taxes. BAA is not concerned since the original introduction of the tax did not affect sales in value or passenger volume terms. Airlines can quote prices excluding tax, but package tour operators cannot do so and are more concerned about the impact on sales. The tax comes into force from Nov 1997 since prices for summer 1997 have already been set by some tour operators.

Airtours: it don't costa lot

Article Abstract:

Airtours is a UK tour operator which ranks second after Thomson Travel. The company should benefit from a rise in gross domestic product (GDP) predicted by the UK chancellor. Tour operators are vulnerable to falls in demand due to the impact of their overheads, and weak demand from Jan 1996 could lead the company to cut prices in addition to reducing capacity. Stronger demand could lead to a pre-tax profit of 75 million pounds sterling or above this figure.
