How can we save ships with small crews?
Article Abstract:
The US Navy has launched a program to reduce the cost of operating ships. The focus of the program is the development of DD-21, a 10,000-ton ship with a crew of 95. The Naval Sea Systems Command has partnered with the commercial maritime industry in using advanced commercial-off-the-shelf technology and new concepts in ship operation. The Navy is employing these technologies to modify some of its ships such as the USS Yorktown.

Monitor's Driving Force Emerges
Article Abstract:
The Civil War-era USS Monitor, which was designed by John Ericsson, had a steam engine that generated about 400 horsepower. The Monitor, which sunk off the coast of North Carolina during a towing operation in 1862, is being salvaged for research and conservation.
