Deflation has long been a fact of life for markets, with performance tables dominated by growth stocks, utilities and takeover situations. Cheap money is unlikely to produce recovery in 2000, and this is reflected in the Japanese situation, with Germany going the same way. Broker Morgan Stanley Dean Witter expects slow growth for the euro, with interest rates falling and trade flows favouring the US dollar, and this could hinder investment in Europe.

Michelin: on the right track

Article Abstract:

Michelin has seen a rise in its share price and has made a number of announcements about the company's plans. Michelin is to redeem 3.5 billion French francs worth of convertible bonds which are to be exchanged for equity. This move should be accepted by bond holders as the share price is performing well. Michelin's gearing ratio will be cut by this move. Meanwhile, the company is to cut its domestic work force by over 700 employees.

Accumulation and maintenance trusts (A&M) are recommended by most advisers, if grandchildren will be the only beneficiaries, and these can be distributed by paying school fees for instance. All or part of a portfolio can be move to A&M trusts which would mean there would be no initial inheritance tax (IHT) charge on the gift.
