IDCNY's green resource

Article Abstract:

The World Environmental and Business Issues Center (WEB) serves as a forum for architects, industrial designers and policy makers who seek to discuss environmental issues related to industrial design. The WEB center is located in New York's International Design Center and operates on a meager budget which has prompted questions regarding its capacity to mount the difficult tasks which it seeks to investigate. To offset these problems, the WEB center has come up with a series of seminars and workshops designed to stimulate interest and encourage active participation among various design groups.

Yellow fever

Article Abstract:

Automotive engineer Steve Wilder and industrial designer William Plumb have offered their update of the traditional New York yellow checker cab, which has been sought to be redesigned since 1976. Their main concept was to vary the chassis, partly to achieve a more avialable and affordable model. The design's improvements, such as an ability to accomodate wheelchair-bound persons, are also detailed. The project, which has struggled throughout the recession, may be able to construct a working prototype by the end of 1993 through funds from Du Pont, Brooklyn Union Gas and the aluminium industry.

How green is your paper?

New papers from five US companies have been sampled to test their manufacturers' environmental consciousness. Environmental consciousness is revealed by the extent to which waste paper is used in the product. The use of chlorine in the paper-making process has not yet become an issue.
