In from the cold

Article Abstract:

Scandinavian economies have not been performing as well as European Monetary Union (EMU) member states. While the latter appear to have achieved economic convergence even in the face of the global economic crisis, the former have performed quite differently in recent times. Norway has had to contend with a weakening currency and has been compelled to raise interest rates. Denmark also has had to increase its own rates to arrest currency outflows and prevent the slide of the krone. Sweden has likewise experienced a weakening of its currency almost completely because of international developments. Finland has been the only one of the four Scandinavian countries to perform strongly. As an EMU member, its economy has been bolstered by the low euro rates. The prospects for the future of all of these economies are discussed.

Pumping in new life

Article Abstract:

The ecology of Mongolia's Lake Hovsgol is being threatened by poaching and the possibility of phosphate mining. Hovsgol is a tributary source for Russia's polluted Lake Baikal, its pure water mitigating the effects of Baikal's contamination. However, if the phosphate mining is allowed, Hovsgol will not remain pollution-free itself. Mongolia must develop a management plan balancing environmental control with the financial rewards of mining and tourism.
