Information technology as competitive advantage: the role of human, business, and technology resources

Article Abstract:

The impact of the use of information technology (IT) on corporate performance is examined. The study tests the hypotheses that embedded advantages that may account for significant performance variance among firms are generated by human resources complementary to IT and by business resources complementary to IT, and that technology resources do not account for such performance variance. Data for the study are drawn for a relatively low-technology industry, the retail trade. The findings suggest that IT can bolster productivity, but it alone cannot guarantee sustained performance advantages. The study indicates that the retailers that gained competitive advantage were those that employed technology to leverage intangible, complementary human and business resources.
