Technology shares get singled out

Article Abstract:

The London Stock Exchange has set up its techMARK initiative to be launched in Nov 1999 with over 170 companies of varying sizes. High-growth companies have been attracted to Nasdaq, Neuer Markt and elsewhere, and this trend may not be reversed by techMARK. Granville's Richard Donner argues that techMARK will not focus enough on issues fostering technology investments, but instead will be a type of new index. There will be new listing rules so that companies will be able to gain access to equity finance and a listing more easily.

Institutions brush aside millennium bug

Article Abstract:

Institutional investors have remained active in the British stock market, despite earlier fears that trading would be hit by concerns about the year 2000 computer transition problem. Turnover has risen by almost 100% for stocks in the FTSE 100 compared with 1998, and institutions account for much of this increase. Institutions have tended not to be active in the Alternative Investment Market (Aim), but this is normal. Retail investors attracted to internet stocks appear to be responsible for a rise in Aim prices since Sep 1999.
