Lloyd's: copping the lot
Article Abstract:
A fire in Eurotunnel's railroad tunnel began on a French truck, and insurance for trucks in France tends to be less restrictive than UK truck insurance. This could mean that the truck's insurer will face the burden of the costs of the fire that could be as much as 2 billion French francs. This could involve reinsurers which may include syndicates from Lloyd's of London. Settlement of the costs and apportionment are not likely to be carried out for some years from 1996.

Eurotunnel
Article Abstract:
Eurotunnel could be affected by a reduction in operating profit from lost duty-free sales, and the company may not be able to remedy the shortfall. Meanwhile, the company is still faced with a large debt burden, and could be under pressure from price competition. The company has benefited from an increase in passenger revenues of 31% for 1st half 1999. A new telecoms cable is likely to be laid through the tunnel, wth an agreement expected prior to 2000.
