Is the tech bubble about to burst?

Article Abstract:

US interest rates are set to rise, and this raises questions as to whether the rise in prices of high-tech stocks can be sustained, or whether the bubble will burst. Federal Reserve chairman, Alan Greenspan, wants stock prices to rise in line with household income rather than faster, and is concerned that consumption levels could trigger inflation. High-tech stocks could remain high with other stocks falling, but high-tech stocks may show a more marked cyclical pattern than expected, and may fall.

A bear story

Article Abstract:

US equities may face a difficult year in 1997, according to Morgan Stanley. Share prices tend not to perform well after a two year period of rising, and US long-term interest rates could rise. Earnings problems have not yet appeared despite concern from bears that profits could be depressed by weaker growth. Over-optimism toward share prices could indicate a market at its peak. Prices could continue to rise in 1997 before they fall due to increases in interest rates.

Shared concern

Article Abstract:

US economic growth is estimated at 4% for 1st qtr 1997 and US interest rates could be raised on May 20 1997 as a result of the strength of the economy. A further rise is likely in Jul 1997 which could leave rates at 6%. There is uncertainty as to whether rates will be raised further. Stock valuations are not likely to be greatly reduced by inflation, and their longer term outlook appears positive. There may still be some volatility over the shorter term.
