JSF engine work goes competitive

Article Abstract:

The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has awarded a team of two leading manufacturers Rolls-Royce and General Electric (GE) a $2.4 billion contract to conduct a system development and demonstration (SDD) phase of work on a new engine called the F136 for the US Air Force's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. NAVAIR has introduced a healthy dose of competition into the JSF program by awarding the contract to the team of GE and Rolls-Royce, as Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corporation is already working under contract to NAVAIR to perform the SDD phase of its own version of a JSF engine called the F135.

Britain warns U.S. on JSF tech transfers

Article Abstract:

Britain's minister for defense procurement, Lord Peter Drayton, announced to the members of the US Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) that his country could withdraw from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program if the US does not meet its technology needs. The technology transfer issues tie into Britain's insistence upon 'operational sovereignty' in the use of aircraft and unless these are addressed successfully the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the nine participating countries could be affected.
