Article Abstract:

Most of the UK public believes that financial advisers should assess clients' ethical preferences when giving advice. The UK Social Investment Forum argues that such an assessment should be included in general advice as a matter of course. Not all the public is aware of what ethical investment means, though some 49% who had the concept explained have expressed interest in ethical funds. The Personal Investment Authority (PIA) argues that these issues should arise naturally when advisers are in touch with investors, but they may not if investors are unaware of ethical options.

Warning on bond Pep charges

Article Abstract:

UK investors could face risks from high yield personal equity plans (Peps) especially if charges are subtracted from capital instead of income, according to investment managers. Such charges could lead to capital erosion. The industry is divided on the issue as to whether charges should be made on income or capital. Fund managers are not under pressure to select stocks of lesser quality if charges are not made to income, but investors seeking long-term growth may prefer charges to capital.

Watchdogs slow to act on broker funds

Article Abstract:

UK broker funds are managed by independent financial advisers (IFAs). The UK Personal Investment Authority (PIA) is reviewing controls on these funds. Critics point to conflicts of interest when brokers sell their own funds, and the issue has become especially relevant after the liquidation of Knight Williams in 1995. Brokers argue that broker funds offer flexibility, and their range of performance is wide. They may also involve high charges for investors.
