Labour probes the pensions problem

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government plans a review of pensions. The state pensions scheme faces higher costs due to demographic trends and problems with funding these costs. There are problems with private pensions since they provide poor value and exclude many people such as the poor and those not in paid work. The new pension scheme has to be simple and this will help to keep costs low. The Office of Fair Trading proposes index-tracking funds as a simple way to tackle the problem.

Pensions review fiasco: watchdog tries again

Article Abstract:

The UK Securities and Investments Board (SIB) is tackling pensions mis-selling for the second time. There are 500,000 potential cases yet only 4,000 of these have resulted in compensation offers. The SIB has recognised that its initial efforts have not succeeded and is seeking to streamline the system by asking for less information from occupational pension schemes. Investors may take legal action out of frustration over the delays in tackling this problem.

Why women get lousy pensions

Article Abstract:

Pensions for women in the United Kingdom tend to be lower than pensions for men. This is partly because women contribute less due to their earnings being undermined by unpaid family responsibilities, and because women live longer on average so are paid lower annuities. The age at which women take time off to have children can be significant since early contributions to pension schemes tend to be worth more than contributions made close to retirement.
