Article Abstract:

Chartered accountant (CA) Anne Bown is a volunteer business manager for the Safe Motherhood Initiative, a Third World maternal health project, who laments the poor state of communications in Lagos, Nigeria. The CA, who is a regional program officer with the Canadian Coast Guard, has to wake up at 3 a.m. so she can put a telephone call to the African country. Despite the frustrations, Bown is undeterred in her efforts to help pregnant young women in Nigeria.
