Laporte in a storm

Laporte is a chemicals group which has been affected by weak demand from customers in bulk polymers and construction industries. The company has some divisions which have performed well, such as electronic chemicals. The company's new chief executive is Jim Leng, who has taken over from Ken Minton. A plant rationalization program is planned by Leng, with 10 plants to close of a total of 100. A profit of 120 million pounds sterling could be achieved for 1996 by the company.
