Leave it to the experts

Article Abstract:

UK investors can use unit trusts to invest in smaller companies. Unit trusts allow investors to diversify, improve the liquidity of their investments, and take advantage of professional management skills. Diversification is needed because risk levels are higher. Pooled vehicles benefit from greater liquidity. There are charges for using these skills, but investors have access to a specialist team. The selection of stocks is important where smaller firms are concerned, and some managers have built up strong reputations for their stock selection skills.

A modest proposal for trust cannibalism

Article Abstract:

Robin Angus, head of the investment trust department at Nat West Securities, argues that the UK should have fewer and stronger investment trusts. These trusts have seen discounts to assets widen in 1996 with total discounts at 5 billion pounds sterling of value that shareholders have yet to realise. Liquidating assets allows shareholders to realise a profit especially when the trust is investing in an investment type that has become outdated. Independent boards are needed to deliver shareholder value.
