Ledger software for the chief accountant

Article Abstract:

Datavision's 14,000 pound sterling Miracle software package consists of three accounting databases: sales, purchase, and general ledger. Miracle runs on Data General minicomputers and is compatible with electronic messaging, spreadsheets, and graphics software such as Present, Trendview, and Compucalc. Miracle assumes Data General equipment, accessibility to 10 printers, and 4 Mb of memory. Miracle is more sophisticated than most current minicomputer ledgers, with many advanced features and programs than are multi-company, multi-bank, multi-currency, and multi-user. The instructional manual is well organized and comprehensive, but tedious when it comes to each program. Order processing and invoicing are not included in the package.

The UK's Yorkshire Electric Board (YEB) acquired Burroughs' Counterpoint microcomputers for 65 local customer service shops and offices to improve handling of customer payment, review of customer usage and payment histories, and analysis of credit history and other data for credit allowance. YEB serves 1.9 million customers in a 4,000 square mile area. The Counterpoint systems are screen based, offer both receipt and inquiry capabilities, and support multiple workstations at the customer counter, each including a processor, 256Kbytes RAM, a magnetic identity card reader security system for users, and an optical character reader.

Choosing the right nominal ledger

Article Abstract:

A large number of general or nominal ledger software packages available, as demonstrated by a UK survey of 250 packages. The software should be chosen before hardware, if possible. The user's manual system should be assessed to determine what facilities will be required in the software. Users with resident hardware have a wide range of choices: 120 packages for the PC-AT environment, 65 for IBM S-36 and larger systems, 46 for DEC systems, and others for NCR, Olivetti, and Altos. The largest number of packages run under MSDOS, followed by UNIX. Eighty-two products are written in COBOL, 76 in BASIC, and 28 in C.
