Lending to yourself

Article Abstract:

The Canadian federal government has introduced a Home Buyers' Plan which allows taxpayers to withdraw a maximum of $20,000 from their registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) to be used in purchasing a house. Under the plan, only the principal will be repaid. While the plan may appeal to some people, others may consider it wise not to avail of the program. Since the borrowers owe the money to themselves, they may decide to ignore repayments. This will result to additional tax expenses and reduced value of the RRSP. Thus, it would be best not to borrow from the RRSP.
