Limitation: a strategy for the long term

Article Abstract:

A hypothetical case study of a UK electronics and light engineering group holding company is presented to illustrate a limitation strategy for dealing with the economic downturns caused by the recent recession in the UK. Management should take stock of their situation through a review of all their business endeavors. Management of a firm during a recession requires that a firm establish priorities and targets. Management must focus on key issues to ensure that it is concentrating on the core business and on the essential activities within each business. In order to improve the firm's performance, management must be responsive, reduce cuts significantly but selectively, involve clients in cutting costs and improving quality, and reduce complexity.

Women in management: surmountable hurdles?

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Manpower Studies has completed a research survey focusing on the question of women's access to management positions. The survey finds that only 20% of Britain's estimated 3 million managers are women. It also estimates that women make up barely 4% of Britain's middle managers and only 2% of its senior managers. The Institute attributes the highly unequal levels of women in management to career advancement barriers such as discriminatory promotion processes, the lack of support for family concerns relating to issues such as quality childcare, and the often hostile organizational climate for the problems women executives face.
