Response slow to global 800 numbers
Article Abstract:
The International Telecommunications Union has received only about 20,000 applications for the Universal international Freephone Numbers. Operators stress that only few companies were informed about the global 800 numbers. The service, which will be launched in July 1997, will enable companies to reach organizations anywhere in the world without using country codes. It also promises to enhance overseas business, purchasing and customer service operations.

Phone on the range
Article Abstract:
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission deregulated the long-distance telephone market in Jun. 1992 to open it to competition. The monopoly held by the Stentor alliance ended. The deregulation has pressured local rates to rise to levels more reflective of maintenance costs. Competing carriers in the market have to control costs and streamline their services to stay profitable.
