Local search and the evolution of technological capabilities

Article Abstract:

There is a widely held assumption on evolutionary perspectives on industrial innovation that 'local search' substantially limits the direction of corporate R&D. However, a generalizable approach for describing this technological landscape and the positions of firms within it is not yet in existence. To address this shortcoming, a network-analytic methodology for quantifying the technological landscape generated by the concurrent search activities of a group in high-technology firms is developed. From this perspective, a significant but overlooked element of the dynamics of technological change is that firms do not search independently. The methodology implicitly suggests that a firm may fill a differentiated technological niche because of competitor R&D and not because of its own R&D. Therefore, the position of a firm is based as much on the trajectories chosen by other firms as it does on its own.
