M and S under threat, but not yet

Article Abstract:

There are rumors of a bid for Marks and Spencer, with Tesco and Pinault-Printemps-Redoute cited as possible bidders. There are problems in acquiring a company that has not performed especially well in the retail clothing market, which is especially competitive, and they could deter potential bidders. Middle range retailers of clothing have been under particular pressure, with value-for-money and high value retailers performing better. There are also rumors of a drop in sales for the company prior to Christmas. A bid appears unlikely over the short term, though one may be made when the company begins to recover.

On the slippery slope to extinction: Being a big household name affords no protection against terminal illness in today's tough global marketplace

Article Abstract:

In difficult economic times it is often assumed that only small companies have problems, but no company can guarantee its long-term survival. Many well known UK corporate companies are facing uncertainties, such as Marks & Spencer which recorded its worst ever Christmas trading statement. Safeway has dismissed doubts about its long term future although analysts claim it is the weakest of the main four supermarkets, and engineering firm BICC's market capitalization is just 257 million pounds sterling. Poor management can be blamed but market conditions and economic recession also fuel decline.
