Making alternative agriculture research policy

Article Abstract:

The lack of sufficient professional and financial incentives is the main hurdle to the development of alternative agriculture in the US. The five policy changes for improving alternative agriculture are: imposing a means test for formula fund payment limitation to state directing saved fund towards alternative agriculture, setting priorities to make a condition for getting federal grants, setting relevant social goals and proper dissemination of research information and public involvement in reviewing the agricultural research. There are some limitations owing to decreases in federal funding.

Removing applied agricultural research from the academy

Article Abstract:

Applied agricultural research is not an academic exercise and differs in its goals from the academic kind of research which aims at advancing knowledge. The conflict between the two could be resolved by treating it as a service to university's outside constituencies instead of making it merely an institution syllabus, planned mainly for academic type of research. The main aim of the reform-minded agriculturists should be to make reforms in agriculture and benefit the farmers.

Farm profile: Sortorp, an organic farm in Sweden

Article Abstract:

The Sortorp farm in east central Sweden represents one of the most successful and highly-recognized organic farms in the country. Acquired in 1982 by Kalle and Inger Kallander, Sortorp features 3 ha of vegetable and 21 ha of field crops. Compared to conventional local farms, Sortorp is an all-organic certified farm, which it gained in 1985 after several years of specialized, conventional management operations. Most of its products are marketed via a regional food cooperative.
